The Gorge of Mavri Spilia (meaning “Black Cave”) is about 2 km from the village of Prousos. This is one of the most beautiful and impressive gorges of Evrytania. It takes its name from the famous Black Cave which was a refuge for local residents during the Ottoman period and during the German occupation. What makes the Gorge of Black Cave special is the unique via ferrata route, the start of which is marked by the Black Cave.
The route starts from a graphic stone fountain next to Prousou Tornou Bridge. The trail after the bridge is steep in places and goes through a forest of firs. The landscape is beautiful: picturesque wooden bridges and waterfalls ideal for swimming. If you continue walking, you will see the Black Cave and the ruins of a stone shelter.
The canyon is not difficult to cross and is ideal for novices. It has 10 different ways to descend it. Here you will also see the biggest waterfall of the area (15 meters high).
